OUR MISSION STATEMENT:  We will educate children in a creative, supportive, nurturing environment in partnership with family and community.

Canterbury Community Nursery School's philosophy of educating children is based on the learning theories of Jean Piaget.  He demonstrated that children learn best when they are experiencing the world around them.

Canterbury's staff provides hands-on learning opportunities for preschool aged children in a safe and nurturing environment.  The goals for all of our students are:

    1. Develop a positive self-image.
    2. Develop personal autonomy.
    3. Develop thinking skills.
    4. Develop fine and gross motor skills.

Canterbury continues to challenge and develop the thinking process for every child.  We use a hands-on/minds-on approach.  The children investigate, question, predict and test hypotheses. This higher-level of thinking enables children to understand, retain, and apply what they are learning.

Canterbury Community Nursery School is accredited by the National Association for the Education of Young Children and has begun the process of self study for accreditation through the National Accreditation Commission (NAC).  NAC is sponsored by the National Association of Child Care Professionals (NACCP).  The Virginia affiliate of NACCP is the Richmond Association of Directors of Early Childhoold Education.  The Co-Leaders are Kerri Palmer, Director of Promises Preschool and Terry Tusing, Director of Canterbury Community Nursery School.

Canterbury admits students of any race, color, or national and ethnic origins to all the rights, privileges, programs, and activities generally accorded or made available to students at the school.  It does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, or national and ethnic origin in administration of its educational policies, admission policies and school-administered programs.
